Woodstock and Stanley and Windows operating systems
When purchasing a new computer, one is usually presented with a bewildering range of choices: processor, memory, hard drive, sound, video, the list goes on and on. The choice of an operating system is sometimes the most difficult one to make, especially if you are concerned about compatibility with the software and/or hardware you currently use or intend to use on the new PC.
As the name implies, the operating system manages the operation of the computer and acts as the interface between the user and the PC. The Windows operating system is designed for use on PCs and comes in many different flavors; Windows 95/98/NT/Me/2000 and, most recently, XP are all in use currently.
For the most part, software written for Windows will run on any version of the Windows operating system. Woodstock and Stanley are good examples, and are compatible with any of the Windows operating systems listed above.
Computer hardware, on the other hand, such as printers, monitors, network cards, etc. require drivers to allow computer software access to them, and drivers are often written for specific Windows operating systems. Operating systems come with a wide variety of drivers preinstalled for common hardware devices such as printers and monitors, but drivers for special hardware devices are usually not included.
The hardware security key that comes with Woodstock and Stanley is an example of a special hardware device, and Remsoft includes the latest hardware key drivers along with the software.
If you are upgrading your operating system and have an older installation of Woodstock and Stanley, the hardware key drivers may not function. If this happens – you get a message that the software cannot locate the hardware key – simply contact us and we’ll provide you with the latest drivers.
If you are using LP solver software that also uses a hardware key, you may need a driver update for it as well and will have to contact the solver manufacturer for an update.
