Working with database files in Spatial Woodstock
Opening, viewing and navigating database files in dBase format
Applies to: Spatial Woodstock 3.25, 3.27
Date: 6/15/2004
Forest management planning applications commonly incorporate substantial and diverse amounts of data, which are commonly stored in database files. Shapefile attribute data, for example, is stored in a database file in dBase—DBF—format.
Applications in the Remsoft Spatial Planning System also output information to dBase files, as it is an expedient format for storing sometimes large amounts of data. However, to view and query the contents of a dBase file, you must have access to software that can read it. Spreadsheet applications are usually capable of opening dBase files, but suffer from row/column limits. Moreover, not all database software applications can read dBase files directly, or must convert dBase files to a native format, which may alter the properties of the file in unexpected ways.
The Spatial Woodstock editor allows you to directly open database files in dBase format. The purpose of this tech tip is to describe how to do this, and to list some of the options available to you for navigating and exploring dBase files.
To open a database file in the Spatial Woodstock editor do the following:
1. Click File > Open > Open file. This displays the Open file dialog.
2. Click the Files of type down arrow and select Dbase files (*.dbf).
3. Browse to the folder containing the dBase file that you wish to open.
4. Select the dBase file from the file list.
5. Click Open.
Spatial Woodstock displays dBase files in a table, and you have access to all of the options for navigating, sorting, and filtering tables. You can create pivot table reports, select and delete records and even modify the table structure.
You can open any dBase file of any size in the Spatial Woodstock editor. For example, you could generate a report in Woodstock in dBase format, such as an _ACTIVITY or an _YIELD report, and then open it in the editor to view it. You do not need to open another application to view and edit the dBase file, you can do it directly in Spatial Woodstock.
In summary, dBase files offer a convenient format for storing large amounts of data, and Spatial Woodstock can open dBase files directly.
